Recognizing excellence among our alumni and friends

The College of Science is proud to publicly recognize and honor our alumni and friends for their distinguished personal and career accomplishments, and for exemplary contributions to society that have made a lasting impact in our communities and our lives and that bring honor to the College and to Oregon State University.

Award descriptions

Lifetime Achievement in Science Award

This award honors exceptional and significant contributions to science over the course of a lifetime either through research, scholarship, or teaching.

Distinguished Alumni Achievement Award

This award is given annually to an alumnus/alumna whose exceptional achievements in business, education, public service, or research have brought honor, distinction and visibility to the College of Science at Oregon State University.

Distinguished Service Award

This award recognizes the distinguished service of a friend of the College of Science at Oregon State University for exceptional contributions to their community and to Oregon State University.

Young Alumni Award

This award recognizes the exceptional achievements of a young alumnus/alumna in their career, public service, and/or volunteer activities. (Recipients must be within 10 years of their most recent degree.)


Nominations for all awards are sought from leadership in the College, faculty and staff, the OSU Foundation, and alumni. To recommend exceptional College of Science alumni or friends for these awards, please submit send your nomination to science@oregonstate.edu.

Young Alumni Award recipient aims to cure mitochondrial diseases

The remnants of ancient bacteria live inside each of us as mitochondria, structures in cells that are critical for life. Breakthrough work from Simon Johnson, B.S. biochemistry and biophysics ‘09, and his lab has shed new light on how dysfunction of mitochondria causes human disease. For his great strides towards a cure for mitochondrial diseases within a decade since his last degree, Johnson has received the 2023 Young Alumni Award in the College of Science.
